Letting Go

There are many ways of looking at it, but one thing we may all agree on is that life is a wondrous experience. This can be hard to see. I know it was difficult for me. I’d have bouts of happiness and bliss followed by longer periods of unhappiness and feelings of utter defeat. I didn’t know how to lift myself up and find this feeling on my own. An invisible burden weighed me down. I knew letting go was the only answer.

But How?

“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.”
― Lao Tzu

So many internal background programs run our lives without us even being aware. Situations trigger these programs and off and away they take over on auto-pilot. Because we can’t identify these patterns, we are unconsciously preventing ourselves from letting go.

I depended on outside sources for validation. My relationships were about loving myself through someone else instead of just loving. Every experience got caught up in a negative feedback loop whether I liked it or not.

Breaking the Cycle

The pattern has to break. It is hard to gain new perspective while stuck in the same routine. Breakthroughs and progress cannot occur without change and commitment. It all starts with becoming aware of the patterns in your life.

W — Watch your Words.
A — Watch your Actions.
T — Watch your Thoughts.
C — Watch your Character.
H — Watch your Habits.

This means paying attention to your thoughts, emotions, triggers, diet, and actions. Everything is interrelated. For example, I discovered that eating dairy triggers feelings of low self-esteem and makes me want to curl up into a ball and feel sorry for myself. It also causes my skin to break out thus adding to these feelings. I’ve long since given up dairy products. Intuitively I knew dairy was not good for my personal well-being and it wasn’t until I made this connection that I was able to make the decision to cut it out.

We are our own greatest experiments. Uniquely constructed and completely original. The problem is, we have been inundated with outside programming from our friends, teachers, media, and advertising.

We need to pay attention to ourselves and start sifting through the chaff to find out what our inner voice has to say. Start watching for patterns. Pay attention to your feelings and behaviors. Engage in mindfulness to further your awareness.
